History

The birth of the University is a direct consequence of the conjunction of local realities and interests, given that the area where it is located is one of the most important areas of the country, from a demographic, political and economic point of view, where it had never before had a Higher Education Institution.

By 1970, in La Matanza, there were about 106.000 young people between 18 and 24 years old, 8500 of whom, not finding an answer to their aspirations to pursue university studies in their own county, gave up higher education or were forced to pursue it far from home.

In 1980, the number of young people of this age group was about 152,000 and the number of university applicants was 16,600.

The return of democracy in 1983 was the turning point from which situations and events began to take place that would eventually lead to the realization of the idea of establishing a university in La Matanza County.

This process started growing through community and neighborhood commissions. Meanwhile, potential students held assemblies and neighbors worked at the neighborhood level. At the same time, some legislators began to promote the sanctioning of a law on the National Congress. In 1985, on the occasion of the first parliamentary renewal in the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation, the project acquired new airs and, for the first time, the presentation of the respective bill took place. After a new alternation of power in the Executive Power and changes in the Legislative, in 1989 the project for the creation of the University was insisted upon.

Finally, in the session of the Senate of September 29, 1989, Law 23,748 was approved and enacted on October 23 of the same year, which gave life to the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza.

The first academic year was inaugurated on April 15, 1991 at Schools Nº 27 and Nº 51 of the District. That year, the doors of the University opened to more than 1,200 students enrolled in the three undergraduate courses offered at that time.

At the end of 1991, the current premises were finally taken possession of. After recreating the optimal conditions for young people to have access to scientific and technical training in their own district and in the same physical space.
